The UP Dance Company was founded in 1987 and was set up for the apprentice-ship and professional training of dance majors in the College of Music, University of the Philippines. It aims to promote dance as a serious form of study, profession and communal expression as it develops the technique and creativity of student dancers and choreographers, and of the group as a company - including the faculty (in dance and music). It serves the UP community and the university's choreographic needs (dance and allied arts, other curricular studies and extension programs). UPDC complements a main program of the college and dance degree program: 4 years as diploma, 5 years as s baccalaureate.

The program is the most comprehensive in the country in dance practice and theory, in music and theatre, in Asian and Philippine dance and music, in movement notation (Benesh system, the only one in the country), etc. Students often collaborate with music composition majors in recitals and performances, and sometimes with music faculty as performers and composers.

Many students/graduates have been involved in Asian festivals, workshops, Labanotation studies and academic complementation (the last three mostly in Taiwan). Prominent students have received UP awards, invitations to festivals and workshops in Asia and Europe, and special studies in Taipei and Sumatra. Two were given scholarships in India to study Bharatanatyam (southern classical Indian dance). It is the only company known to have deconstructed dance classics like The Nutcracker (into Maria Clara's dream - as japayuki), Giselle (into Ang Higanti), Cinderella (as MAriang Sinderela), Petrouchka ( into Pedro Kusinero), Les Noces (into ang Kasal), and Swan Lake (into Sa Itim, Sa Puti).

It has premiered a great number of original works from the dance recitals and for a commissioned work for the 30th anniversary of the CCP. NCCA had once sponsored UPDC's national tour, ranging from Aparri to Davao. The Asian festivals that the company participated in were the following countries: Beijing, Hongk Kong, Macao, and Kuala Lumpur.

The UPDC has also been the host of the Contemporary Dance Map in Quezon City - collaboration amongst different dance studios in the city. The group is also a veteran performing group for the National Arts Month of the NCCA and the National Dance Week/International Dance Day.
