Political correctness is all around us. It has its pros and cons... but have we gone too far? What word should be off limits? What words still have merit? With campaigns to snuff out the use of "retard," "gay," among others, is this a good thing for society? The Common Room is back in this, part 1 of 2, taking a long hard look at American political correctness.

What do you think? Are there some words totally without merit? Should we work to stamp out the use of the n word, for example? Or have certain groups gone too far in policing language? What words really offend you? What words do you use, even if they make you feel guilty later on? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Message to liberals: Political correctness does not legislate tolerance; it only organizes hatred. With that said I am proudly politically incorrect.

Stop these political correctness already. It makes me sick. Now people can't really talk about anything because they afraid that they might hurt other people's feelings. It start to make people dishonest about pretty much everything and just say what other people want to hear. I heard a lot of European hate Americans because they're too political correct. Their conversation is about something shallow that's on surface like 'what are you doing tonight', they never have something deeper or more meaningful to talk about. It comes off as fake for them.

I think a lot of people need to grow a skin... when I was growing up the saying was sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me... grow a skin and deal with it... if someone says a word... that's what it is ... a word... it only has a meaning to the listener... like carlin said a word only has power if you allow it to have power.  people can say whatever they want its up to you to file it away in whatever mode you have to do just dismiss it if it really bothers you... like me personally i HATE when anyone of darker skin pigment than me... refers to me as "the white guy" but does that mean i'm gonna punch em for saying it? nope they have just as much right to call me a white guy as i have to say anything i want to say  keep it in perspective peeps

Just say what you want, and people should man the fuck up. Or you'll get punched. Either way it will be corrected.
