Lao PDR continuing to experience strong economic growth and broad progress in reducing poverty and achieving human development objectives. However, significant inequalities persist along rural-urban lines, geographic areas and ethnic groups where gender disparities and challenges are accentuated. Lao women play important roles in agriculture, small businesses, trade, tourism and emerging industries. But their roles are often undervalued and potential contributions limited. Women and girls have the potential to become key drivers of both poverty reduction and economic development.

Responding to the key gender issues facing the country, the World Bank is pursuing a two-pronged strategy focused on reducing vulnerability and improving opportunities. This video depicts how investing in building capacity of women, building basic business skills, providing an opportunity to engage successfully in small business activities can become a life changing experience.
