The good folks at Ratron ( http://www.raytron.co.jp ) have created Chapit, the entertainment and automation robot for home use. It's just a proof of concept at this point, but they may start shipping in 2008. Cost is estimated at 200,000 Yen.
The robot can interface with your house appliances and connect to the internet.
The child's voice might be a bit eeire for some people, but does well in clarity. You may notice some slowness in response at first. It has a 100 word recognition range, but it can be extended to 10,000.
