WRAL-TV news story by news anchor Charlie Gaddy regarding the transition from the original SKY 5 news helicopter to a new SKY 5. Both were Hughes 500 D models, but the newer Hughes had updated avionics, newer microwave technology, and slightly more powerful Allison turbine engine. PLUS, a new pilot, Frank Beall. (1st pilot was Randy Watkins 1979-1982; 2nd was Mike Allen 1982-1984; Frank Beall 1985-1987; Steve Wiley is the current SKY 5 pilot.)

Since the old and new SKY 5 practically looked alike, aside from the paint scheme, the station wanted the public to know that indeed it was a new helicopter. To demonstrate that fact, video was taken of the old SKY 5 leaving the station's helipad and replaced by the new SKY 5. Plus there was a new pilot, although Frank did fly the old SKY 5 for a short while. Frank eventually went to WESH-TV in Orlando, Florida to fly their news helicopter.
