Sword Art Online is an MMORPG where players control their avatars with their bodies using a piece of technology called Nerve Gear. Upon first release of the game, the players discover they cannot log out. The game creator is holding them captive unless they reach the 100th floor of the games tower and defeat the final boss. But the biggest issue for the players is that the nerve gear they are using has been modified so that if they die in the game they die in real life.
The premise behind this anime is nothing short of genius in terms of hooking a big audience, but for those that are looking for an awesome action filled adventure then this may fall short of your expectations. yes it does contain the suspense and excitement you would expect in this genre of anime during those scenes but this inevitably turns into a romance story, with at least 2 or 3 episodes being entirely devoted to relationship development and containing little to no action.
In saying that, the core idea of SAO being the VRMMO world of life and death really holds this anime together for the less romantic, the main characters Kirito and Asuna seem to perfect and basically contain no flaws in their personalities and their relationship seems to fall into place without any real struggle. However, for those that are looking for character realism i would suggest watching something other than an anime.
So, once the initial hook of the MMO concept fades this show really realize on you attachment with the romantic relationship between the main characters, and if you absolutely hate romance stories then you will end up hating this anime. The animation here is average with nothing noteworthy or overly different to anything else. The plot tends to feature side stories which don't relate to the main story arc in any way and just distract from it. usually featuring some pretty girl that easily falls for the main male character and a character development plot is rendered pointless as it moves onto the next story arc never to here from these characters ever again.
In saying that, many shows do the same thing but are regarded as great such as Naruto and Bleach so I don't get why so many are surprised by this. The character development is poor being that it centers on the 2 main characters and interacts very little with the support characters like many romance story do i.e. Love Hina, Chobits and Ai Yori Aoshi to name a few. However unlike many anime where the characters dance about each other until the very end where they finally get it on, the main characters develop to this point relatively early and the remainder of the story involves hardships which would see there relationship destroyed in some way.
if by this point you have fallen in love with Kirito and Asuna's relationship then this anime shines as bright for you as the plot of titanic did to a million schoolgirls, but if you dont care then everything past the first dozen episodes will make you fall to sleep or bash your head against a wall.
The music's pretty much perfect and sets each mood beautifully, so even if the scenes lack something you still get the emotional kick the director was aiming for.
In summary, whether you enjoy the main MMORPG concept or not this is essentially a love story with all the hardships and struggles that come with one just like a good romance should, especially leading up to the mid-season episodes. I personally love this series because it combines my 2 favorite things in anime, Fantasy and romance. And mixes them almost perfectly for my liking, so despite the many things it lacks SAO is a pretty good anime. The hype about it mostly comes from those like me who absolutely love it and therefore can't be objective to its flaws, and the negative reviews given by many others are generally not bias, so this is definitely not an anime for everyone. In saying that, you will either love this anime or hate it, and if you love it you're in for a hell of a ride, I recommend this anime to anyone who is a fan of romance without too much care about the other stuff, but likes a bit of arse kicking and action every so often.
