The Kingdom of Hawaiʻi was founded by the campaign of unification launched by King Kamehameha the Great between 1795 and 1810. Over time diplomatic relations were established with other powers, a small but smart and dedicated army was built and the country developed from a tribal to a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral legislature. Over time American business interests came to dominate and the native Hawaiians were almost totally disenfranchised. When the monarchy tried to restore power to the native people the monarchy was overthrown in 1893 by the foreign elements with US military support and the islands were annexed to the United States in 1898.
