The 2009 Service in Uniform Award is being given to an exceptional volunteer who wears or has worn a uniform in service to others.

John Leenhouts retired from the United States Navy after 28 years of service. During that time he logged more than 8,000 hours piloting more than 35 different types of military, antique, and civilian aircraft. He has the distinction of being the leading Carrier Aviator; having accumulated 1,645 traps or landings on 16 different carriers. Since his retirement, John has been volunteering in the community, often juggling projects for several organizations simultaneously. He has volunteered for Daniel, Dreams Come True, National Multiple Sclerosis Society of Northeast Florida, the American Heart Association and others. John owns an antique bi-plane and has given rides in it to children with terminal illnesses as part of their last wish. He also has been involved with the Fly and Ride event in conjunction with the NAS Air Show. In 2002, he chaired and helped implement the Daniel Bike to School Motorcycle Ride, which continues today as Rock and Ride, a major fundraiser with more than 12,000 riders.
