On October 13th, 2016, the indigenous Pataxó village of Aratikum, in the south of Bahía, consisting of 14 families, was completely destroyed for reasons of repossession. Police forces destroyed the school, the health center, the cultural center and all homes. All belongings which could not be saved by their owners during the attempt were burnt.

After being expelled from their territory, the community members installed a provisional camp along the national road.

Until now they haven’t received any governmental support.

The incident has taken place only a few kilometers from where the German Football team was accommodated during the World Championship in 2014. Since then, prices of territory in the area have risen significantly and land privatization processes are becoming more and more common…

The people of Aratikum currently remain at the place only with the most basic needs for survival; without a clear objective for the future.
