Starfish are wasting away up and down the California Coastline. A mystery disease is eating them from the inside out.
The sea stars being affected are being found as North as Alaska and as far south as Southern California. Little is known about the disease and what's causing it, and most importantly, how to stop it.
"It just looks lie a graveyard out there, just starfish arms scattered everywhere. Some are just one armed sea stars, two, three, some are doing a little better with four arms, but still it's not what it should be."
Losing starfish could seriously disrupt the circle of life in the nationally protected marina sanctuary as well as up and down the Central Coast line.
"This could have a major tap down effects, because sea stars are major predators. They have been known to eat a lot of snails, and snails eat kelp. If there is a huge boom in the snail population due to less sea stars, it could wipe out the kelp forest.
