On Tuesday, March 22, management at the University of Glasgow decided to use force to evict students who had occupied a disused building as a protest against proposed cuts in staff and courses. This was a peaceful protest and the students had been using the building to organise talks and seminars and as a base for supporting lectuers on strike protesting against job cuts and alterations to the pension system. At some point, some one 'high up' decided to call in the police. A police helicopter was present and dogs were also brought in. Today, at an emergency meeting, the GU branch of the UCU (the lecturers' union) unanimously passed a motion to strongly condem the use of such tactics on what has been, up to now, a peaceful protest. .
