The Direct Connection Between International Conservation and U.S. Economic Security

Congressman Ander Crenshaw, House ICC Co-Chair
Peter Seligmann, Co-Founder, Chairman, & CEO, Conservation International
Rob Walton, Chairman, Walmart

Rob Walton, Chairman of Walmart, was honored on June 22 with the ICCF "Good Steward" Award for his lifetime of personal commitment to conservation. Mr. Walton talked about the importance of protecting natural resources to ensure that future generations continue to have the essential goods and services provided by nature, such as fresh water and food, and about his commitment to conservation both in his personal life and capacity as Chairman of Walmart Stores. Last October, Walmart announced an acceleration of its global commitment to source key agricultural products responsibly, which will have ripple effects down its supply chain, generating increased demand for sustainable goods, and encouraging competitors to follow suit. Public-private partnerships are an important component of international conservation. This year the Walton Family Foundation committed $10 million to the Sustainable Landscapes Partnership -- a public-private partnership with USAID, the Government of Indonesia and Conservation International -- aimed at reducing deforestation in Indonesia. There is a direct connection between international conservation and U.S. economic and national security interests. Continued U.S. leadership in international conservation is critical.
