South Bend Washington High School graduate Skylar Diggins has won the Gatorade National High School Athlete of the Year award.

Diggins, who will play for Notre Dame this fall, received the award today at a ceremony in Los Angeles. She beat out five other female finalists. Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert won the male award.

Previous winners of the award, which recognizes athletic achievements and academic excellence, include Peyton Manning, LeBron James, Dwight Howard and Derek Jeter.

Diggins and the other finalists will walk the red carpet Wednesday night before the taping of ESPN's ESPY Awards, which will air Sunday night on ESPN.
