Natural prosperity: The condition of being successful or thriving, in a thriving society on a thriving planet.

As we enter the Anthropocene (our current geologic period), we must shift away from our past mindset, which catered our environment to suit our needs in society. We must begin to think how we can redefine our present and future impacts, and strike the balance needed in order to achieve a sort of natural prosperity that allows all facets of our lives to be sustainable and resilient. In two words "natural prosperity" captures wellbeing, green growth, natural capital and a host of other ideas. Natural prosperity is a new kind of wealth -- one that we should idealize. It brings about a new mindset where business activities are enhanced by working with the environment, using natural processes to reduce environmental impacts and lead to increased profits.

Monique Haakensen is a scientist with a passion for business development and true environmental sustainability. She is the president and principal scientist at Contango Strategies, developing cleantech strategies through applied and environmental microbiology to add-value and / or reduce environmental impacts for the energy and natural resources sectors. An industrial and environmental microbiologist, her experience is interdisciplinary and wide-ranging including subjects such as biogeochemistry, microbial ecology, bioinformatics, genetics, and bioprocessing. She earned her PhD by the age of 26 and has published over a dozen peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, provided presentations at local and international conferences, published a book chapter, and patented intellectual property. In 2011 Dr. Haakensen was named as a winner of Profit Magazine's FuEL awards, recognizing Canada's top 20 entrepreneurs under the age of 30.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
