On the way back from the Caribbean to Tampa on 3/3/12, the Norwegian cruise ship Star was called to rescue a sail boat from the Gulf of Mexico. I observed this rescue right from the 9th floor balcony of my cabin. I don't know what happened to the sail boat the Hokulani from Honolulu, Hawaii, but both passengers were rescued safely and their boat sent a drift.

I had a medical emergency while single handing from La Paz to Seattle and the Doctor off of the Norwegian Star came on board.  This was about 125 miles off the coast of Baja. Good guys on that ship.  This  was 2003.

most likely lost the rudder, it becomes unbearable quick to be on a out of control boat
I was on it too

Your father is a very lucky man to have gotten the vessel back in such a manner. My guess is that whatever happened won't be ever happening again to him.

Cool man! And yes, had I the resources to do the same it would have been the correct thing to do.

Busted steering gear probably.
spencer marshall
No, my guess would be that they busted their steering gear and lost rudder control.

Evidently it was not running, however, as you can see by the comments, the owner got the vessel back.

Again: Why was what appears to be a perfectly good boat abandoned? Not sinking, dismasted or sails torn off. The weather looks good. Mental fatigue?

that is so cool. considering im about to go on a cruise on the star on the 9th of July, This is a cool fact to know. Im guessing the sailboat's secondary engine died, and the wind was too strong for the sail.
