Located in the fashionable Bairro Alto district, the traditional heartland of intellectuals, artists and revolutionaries, Bairro Alto Hotel is Lisbon's first contemporary boutique hotel.
Capturing the indomitable spirit of exploration that pervades Lisbon, a city long associated with explorers, traders and settlers, Bairro Alto Hotel both embraces the Portuguese architectural tradition, while respectively turning it on its head.
In what is their first hotel project, decorator José Pedro Vieira and his business and creative partner, architect Diogo Rosa Lã, from Porto-based Bastidor, Interiores e Design, undertook the interior renovation of the Bairro Alto Hotel, shifting from their experience in minimalist private housing projects to this very personal interpretation of Lisbon.
Transporting their city feeling into interior space, materials, textures and colours, each detail from furniture to the electrical switches was carefully studied, so the sensation would be one surprise, but still of nostalgic comfort, as though the whole setting had been in place for many years.
Bairro Alto Hotel represents a fusion of the old with the new. Through intensive research the designers intended it to pay homage to the country's architectural and design styles through the ages, including exotic influences of its former colonies, while interweaving contemporary materials from other countries including England, France, Morocco and Italy. The past was also meticulously retraced in the sourcing of original materials and application of various styles.
