The Department for Regional Development, Rural Affairs, Arts and the Gaeltacht organises the national TidyTowns competition since 2016.
In 2016 the TidyTowns competition had over 800 entries. It is estimated that the number of people involved in TidyTowns nationally runs into the hundreds of thousands.
Skerries has been entering the competition since 1959 one year after its commencement. And in 2016, Skerries finally made it to the top.
The primary focus of TidyTowns is to encourage communities to improve their local environment and make their area a better place to live, work and visit. The emphasis is on participating rather than winning as the very act of taking part brings benefits to the community.
