Salinas Valley on the central coast of California grows lots of organic & conventional vegetables (romaine lettuce, broccoli, etc.) & strawberries for the U.S. & for export. This productive & intensively-farmed region uses some of the most advanced agricultural practices for tillage, planting, pest control, food safety, irrigation management, & harvest in the world. These high-input crops also require lots of hard working people. USDA scientist Dr. Eric Brennan reflects on the growth of the organic industry here & on some things that make Salinas unique.
