Trooper Karine Blais, 21 years of age, of Les Méchins, Quebec was killed and four other soldiers were injured when their armored vehicle struck a roadside bomb north of Kandahar City in the Shah Wali Kowt District. She had only been on the ground in Kandahar for two weeks. It was her first overseas tour of duty since enlisting in 2006.
Blais was assigned to 12e Régiment Blindé du Canada (12th Armoured Regiment of Canada) based at Valcartier, Québec. She was serving with the 2nd Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment Battle Group deployed with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
