A 24-year-old deli clerk pulled a machete on a masked man wielding a gun during a robbery attempt at the Stop & Shop Deli in Brentwood on Long Island in New York on September 25.

It was sometime in the evening when a man in a grey mask entered the deli. He pointed a .22-caliber pistol at the clerk and fired it once, just missing the young man behind the counter. In a matter of seconds, the clerk went for a two-foot long machete under the register, unsheathed it, then fearlessly chased the would-be robber out of the store. the chase continued across the parking lot until the masked man was safely off the property.

The owner of the deli, Elena Alvarado, told NBC 4 New York that they started keeping the machete handy "for protection" just a month ago. The heroic clerk had been working there part-time for four years, though Alvarado said she wished he hadn't chased the armed criminal, for his own sake.

"You can make money again, but not your life," Alvarado said.

Police are searching for the masked man and have been receiving tips about who he is since the video was released, according to Detective Lt. Kevin Breyer. No arrests have been made yet.

The clerk was not hurt in the incident, despite the gun firing, and nothing was taken from the deli.

Reports noted that the date in the surveillance video reads August 7, 2011, but is a mistake due to a glitch in the recording equipment.
