Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Music by The Side Effects
Westfield Culver City is pleased to present 'Robot Sculptures By Bruce Gray', a film by Eric Minh Swenson airing in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name. Eric Swenson was chosen to create a film for this project to enhance and give context to the exhibition experience. Swenson's film documents Gray's process of making the robots with first hand footage shot in Bruce Gray's Los Angeles studio - sculpting Gray style.
The choice of robots has to do with Bruce's childhood fascination, enjoying them for their futuristic and often funny appearances. With the many examples of robots used in cartoons, comics, TV shows and movies going back to the earliest days of film making, Bruce feels like he has grown up watching robots progress from tin toys and animations to the various working, talking robots that are starting to become available today. Bruce likes that robots have always had their own unique look, personality, capabilities and functions.
Inspired by a conversation with the daughter of the renowned science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, Bruce started making his series of robot sculptures on a small scale with very positive reactions. However as a sculptor, Bruce appreciates being able to work in large sizes. Gray is thrilled to see three of his robots now in 6-foot tall size for the enjoyment of all when visiting Westfield Culver City. Please stop by to meet DD-214, Tesla and Eyezod. The exhibition will have it's formal opening in November during Family Fun Days running through early summer 2013.
