Momentary Undertow & Van Gogh pairs the music of Tobin Mueller with the artwork of Vincent Van Gogh. "Momentary Undertow" is the second movement of the original piano suite "Suite: Flow" (from Mueller's album "FLOW: The Music of J. S. Bach and Tobin Mueller"). The initial melody is a variation of a theme developed throughout the suite. This movement is distinguished by the middle section, where the theme is transformed into an Impressionistic flow of passion and dissonance, which is why the composer chose Van Gogh's art to illustrate.
"FLOW: The Music of J. S. Bach and Tobin Mueller" is one of three albums in which Mueller explores the relationship between Jazz and Classical music through adaptation and original compositions. The other two albums are "Impressions of Water and Light" (arrangements of works by Debussy, Ravel, Sati, more) and "Of Two Minds: The Music of Frederic Chopin and Tobin Mueller" due out in mid-2016.
