Just like movies or books, games can evoke powerful emotions. The death of a character can have a huge impact on the player. These are the five saddest video game deaths.

Number 5 - Gears of War 3
Gears of War suddenly got emotional with the death of Dom Santiago in the third game. Marcus Fenix's best friend sacrifices himself to save the others. The music and use of slow motion makes this one of the best deaths in gaming.

Number 4 - Mass Effect
Convincing Saren to kill himself in Mass Effect leads to one extremely epic moment. By choosing the right dialog options you make this final boss realize he was wrong. He redeems himself by pulling the trigger, leaving the player with a feeling of sadness.

Number 3 - Red Dead Redemption
The death of the main character in Red Dead Redemption is completely unexpected and extremely powerful. In a brilliant move by the designers the game continues after the death of cowboy John Marston. As his son you get a chance to settle the score and revenge your fathers' death.

Number 2 - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - The Boss
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater fills you with remorse after killing The Boss at the end of the game. You find out she was deep uncover and ordered to become a scapegoat for a nuclear attack. The Boss knowingly paid the ultimate price and Naked Snake is the only one who knows the real truth.

Number 1 - Final Fantasy 7 - Aeris
The death of Aeris is widely regarded as the most moving moment in video game history. Her death made gamers cry all over their Playstation controllers. In Final Fantasy seven the villain actually succeeds in killing your love interest. This results in the most powerful video game death of all time.

Technically, Cloud killed Aerith when he put her in the water and she sunk automatically. Dead bodies float, because of the oxygen trapped in their lungs. So technically, the developers made the real killer Cloud by accident. Logic. Also, Dom should be n.1.
