Lee Musgrave at work

‘Abstract Photography Today: Taking Advantage of Chance’
consists of photographs that are reminiscent of abstract
painting and that provide an opportunity for the viewer to
embrace unpredictability within an approach that values
intuition and expressionism.

The exhibition presents several images from three separate
Series. Each print is 16”x20”, framed under plexi and ready to
hang. It also includes a comprehensive text panel about
vernacular abstraction mounted on 18”x24” foam-core.

My photographs are abstract images created by cropping
photographs of repurposed used art supplies. They merge
random occurrence with conscious creation in pursuit of
elegance within chaos.

Kinetics is a key element in the assembling of my subjects, for
in my studio process assorted fragments of paper, bits of
dried paint, and pieces of used plastic containers, along with
an assortment of small scraps are tossed onto a light pad
allowing them to fall where they may.

After photographing these randomly assembled objects,
cropping the resulting images is my conscious way of
featuring their individual charisma.

Further, I favor a visual language that explores and refines
the shallow picture plane and cropping accentuates that
preference. Like the inherent qualities found in all
contemporary abstract art, my photographs often appear
starkly linear, richly textured and/or almost painterly… and
yet they highlight an ephemeral world that reflects upon
something vulnerable while speaking to the very nature of
our existence.

Except for minor modifications in contrast or hue the only
computer processes applied to the photographs is the
occasional cloning over of small distractive or reflective spots.
