A Symphonic Poem by Antonin Dvorak. The "Noonday Witch" portrays the story of a mother who tells her misbehaving child that the Noonday Witch will come to take him away if he does not behave. But the child does not listen, and the Noonday Witch appears, delivering a fatal blow to the child. The mother faints after the ordeal, only to be revived by her husband, who, when he realises what has happened, expresses his own anguish. The initial themes are of the playful child and the mother giving her warning. Then follows the ugly themes of the terrible Witch. Finally the despairing grief of the parents is depicted by a fortissimo roar from the orchestra.
