The Avengers wrapped up Marvel's Phase One on a major high and now it's time to begin Phase Two and what better way to do that then with Marvel's most successful hero, Iron Man. The first trailer for Iron Man 3 has arrived and we're here to dissect it piece by piece.

This first trailer is much darker than previous Iron Man films and even feels closer in tone to Nolan's 'The Dark Knight' trilogy. There's no funny one-liners or even cocky assertiveness we usually see from Stark, just shots of concern and reflection from our hero as his world begins to crumble around him. Literally.

The trailer begins with a battered Iron Man lying in the snow as Tony Stark is heard saying, "I've got a lot of apologies to make." The forest scene reminds us of the same location Iron Man and Thor battled early on in The Avengers. Whether or not there is any link remains to be seen.

Instead of celebrating the fact that he helped save New York City and ultimately the world from destruction, Stark seems troubled by the experience and talks about being unable to sleep and having nightmares. Has his near death experience in 'The Avengers' make him realize he's not as indestructible as he thought? Maybe discovering the fact that he lives in a world where there are people (both good and bad) with superhuman abilities and he's just a billionaire with a cool suit is making him feel insignificant? Whatever it is, it's clear that Stark won't have much time to wallow in self-pity, because things are about to get real.

We get a few shots of Tony's new armor seemingly having a mind of its own as it grabs Pepper Potts as she tries to awaken Stark from a nightmare. We know the film will borrow heavily from the Extremis storyline which includes Tony having the power to control his suit with his mind and we get glimpses of this throughout the trailer.

As Stark's lab and the older Mark armors are destroyed, we get our first glimpse of Ben Kingsley as Mandarin...or at least the back of his head. He is not wearing his ten rings and at one point is brandishing a gun, but even stranger is the tattoo on his neck that looks oddly like Captain America's shield - though the star in the middle has been replaced by an "A". We have several theories on this. One - it's not Mandarin at all, but in fact Tony Stark or someone else disguised as Mandarin. Maybe Stark got tatted up to honor his fellow Avengers? Another theory is it IS Mandarin and the "A" is actually the symbol for Anarchy. Perhaps Stark isn't the only hero Mandarin has his eyes set on destroying?

In addition to our first look at Mandarin, we also get to hear him for the first time. He may sound like a cross between Tom Hardy's Bane and Hugo Weaving's Agent Smith, but his message is clear - he is ready to teach the world a lesson and the first one is there's no such thing as heroes. We see him in possession of his ten rings, but which, if any of their powers he is able to wield remains to be seen.

War Machine's new Iron Patriot inspired paint job is revealed and it looks as though Mandarin will gain possession of the suit (and perhaps even Rhodey himself) as he sends him to take out the President on Air Force One. Luckily Iron Man is there to save the day, but Mandarin has more in store for our hero as Stark's Malibu home is attacked and sunk to the bottom of the Pacific, with Iron Man along with it.

We also get shots of Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian who appears to have some kind of relationship with Pepper Potts as well as his Extremis developing cohort Maya Hansen played by a bruised Rebecca Hall. A man and boy visiting a makeshift memorial with eerie silhouettes of what we believe to be people killed by a possible nuclear bomb are also spotted. Could this be a flashback of a young Tony Stark and his father or perhaps the results of a weapon created by Stark Industries? We also see a man and boy watching as Tony's chauffer and friend Happy Hogan lies bleeding amongst a pile of rubble. Of course, Happy isn't the only one of Stark's friends in trouble. We see love interest and closest confidant Pepper Potts not only caught in the destruction of Tony's home, but also struggling in some sort of contraption that looks like it was left over from the last Saw film. Gwyneth Paltrow has said she is unsure if she will reprise the role of Potts after Iron Man 3, so the death of Pepper Potts is definitely a possibility.

So what was your favorite revelation from the Iron Man 3 trailer. Do you think the film will be the perfect follow-up to The Avengers? Give us your thoughts and theories below or tweet us over at ClevverMovies. I'm Aja Dang in Hollywood, thanks for watching.
