Reid Ribble (R) is running against Steve Kagen (D) to represent Wisconsin's 8th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. Election day is November 2, 2010.

This is the TV commercial that started airing on CBS during halftime of the Packers/Bills football game today. In it, Rep Steve Kagen says that Reid Ribble wants to phase out Social Security "forcing Wisconsin seniors to fend for themselves." I don't think so. Those words were edited out of a longer answer that Ribble gave to a high school student asking about social security. Here is more of Ribble's complete response:

"There's been a promise made and for those of you that are in their retirement years, you lived and planned your life based on a promise by your government. And so somehow we have to establish a phase out of the current social security system to a new system, and that will have to happen overtime. It could happen in a single generation, it will probably require a fair amount of change in retirement age. In 1937, when FDR signed that bill, the average life expectancy for a white female in the US was 62 years, for a white male is was 59 years, for African Americans it was less than that, and as a result it was never a big intention of having to pay much money out, tax was only 1 percent, and it was just for retirement, and that program as you are aware has been expanded, but hasn't been adjusted. The average life expectancy today is over 74 years. And so we have a whole different dynamic that's never been addressed."

So now, what do YOU think? Do you agree with Steve Kagen? Do you think Reid Ribble wants to let Wisconsin seniors "fend for themselves"?

Steve Kagen has nothing else to run on. So he created this ad to scare the senior citizens of northeast Wisconsin. He also did it to try to entice Ribble to spend his campaign money on a response, instead of on more positive messages. Here's my blog post on the issue:

Also, the independent fact-checking organization, PolitiFact, gave Steve Kagen their "liar liar pants on fire" rating in this article:

Come on people. Steve Kagen is not just some off the wall Democrat. He is OUR representative in Washington. He represents our needs in discussions of national legisltation. Well, he's supposed to anyway. We can't continue to have a deceptive liar in this role. Go to the polls on November 2 and lets end this once and for all. Put Reid Ribble in that seat to represent us with honesty and integrity.
