On Saturday April 19th at the 63rd Annual Del Mar National Horse Show in Del Mar, California we were entertained by Raccoon Jumping. Also referred to as "Coon Jumping," this was done by mules that hunted raccoons mostly in the Midwest. Instead of jumping over brick or rock walls like fox hunting, the mules encountered a lot of barbed wire. The rider would dismount from the mule and put his jacket or a piece of rope over the barbed wire to cover the fence and make it more visible, since coon hunting took place at night. The show competition evolved from the practice of using mules for the coon hunting. Now there are big "Coon Jumping" contests in all the mule shows. The mule is the only equine that can jump from a standing start. Website: http://www.delmarnational.com/
