"Dies Irae" from "Requiem Mass in D minor", by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was composed in Vienna in 1791. Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) is a thirteenth century Latin hymn describing the day of judgment, the last trumpet summoning souls before the throne of God, where the saved will be delivered and the unsaved cast into eternal flames.
The "Requiem", K626, was unfinished at Mozart's death, and was later completed by Franz Xaver Süssmayr. How much of the music was actually written by Mozart, is still unknown. . An autographed manuscript shows the finished and orchestrated introit in Mozart's hand, as well as detailed sketches of the Kyrie and the sequence Dies irae as far as the first nine bars of "Lacrimosa".
