This Higher Education for Development (HED) award-winning film was produced and directed in 2005 by a team, Amanda Grue (then MSU M.S. student in Natural History Filmmaking) and Florence Dunkel, projects' director for the 2 national grants, Higher Education for Development (with funding from USAID) and the USDA Higher Education Challenge Grant Program. The film highlights the mutualistic relationship between undergraduate students at MSU interested in conducting community-based research in Mali and mid-career scientists and an engineer from the Mali national agricultural research organization and the national agricultural college. These seven Malians were selected by their institutions in a national competition to spend 2 years at MSU and University of St. Thomas in St. Paul MN to build a mentor network aimed at aimed at strengthening the village-level food, agricultural, and water safety system in Mali.
