A damage constitutive model incorporated into FE commercial software is proposed for predicting onset and evolution of matrix cracking and stiffness reduction of composite laminates with otherwise arbitrary stacking sequence. Lamina crack densities are used as state variables, with crack growth driven by both mechanical and thermal stresses.

Lamina moduli and critical strain energy release rates GIC and GIIC are the only properties needed for predicting both initiation and evolution of damage, without any additional adjustable parameters. Strain localization, mesh size dependence, in-situ adjustment of strength data, and/or characteristic length, are avoided by the proposed analytical stress-displacement formulation. Predicted values of crack initiation, evolution, and stiffness degradation will be presented along with to experimental data.
