This animation is one of four scenarios exploring how climate change will transform low-income countries. This is a fraught world where the need to cut carbon dominates international relations.

At Forum for the Future, we can't predict the future, but we can think more about the sort of future we want, and how to achieve it. We help organisations understand the system they operate in and the potential impacts of global trends like climate change, population growth and emerging technologies. We use a range of techniques to help them think in a useful and structured way about the future, to challenge their assumptions about the world, and to navigate risk and seize opportunity.

The scenarios used here are not positive visions or predictions of the future, but rather thinking tools meant to open up the debate. The very point of using them is to depict - in a plausible but challenging way - what the future could look like across a number of different directions. Often, that future is quite unpleasant, and our intention is to communicate just that, in order to get people to wake up to the fact that business as usual is not going to lead to sustainable outcomes.

We use scenarios in workshops to help people engage with issues and think about which elements will lead us to a better future. And of course, which elements we want to plan to avoid and make sure don't happen. This can then begin to form a vision of what we should work towards, and this vision will necessarily contain a combination of elements from different scenarios.
