They weren't expected to be any good, but Poland and Ukraine have quietly been stringing together a few decent results.
Poland's young team had a particularly pleasing week just now - first they took on Latvia in Austria, without star strikers Robert Lewandowski and Jacob Blaszczykowski, and still came out on top after Artur Sobiech's late winner.
Four days later, coach Franciszek Smuda brought in the star names to face Slovakia, with the same result. They're a young team, full of confidence, Lewandowski is in hot form and they're in the easiest group. Throw in home advantage and Poland could cause a stir.
Ukraine's recent run is even better....it's now five wins from their last six games and Oleg Blokhin's boys don't do 1-0 victories. Their trip to Austria to meet Estonia resulted in a 4-0 thrashing, and they could even afford to let Andriy Voronin miss an absolute sitter. England -- watch out -- these boys are in YOUR group.
