28 September 2010, our HD video camera watched as the ROPOS ROV worked to install instrumentation 2180m below sea level, next to Grotto Edifice a hydrothermal vent in the Endeavour Ridge Marine Protected Area.
This rare time-lapse footage of ROPOS at work gives a sense of this strange and amazing deep-sea volcanic rift valley in the northeast Pacific Ocean, where fantastic sulfide towers vent 325C hydrothermal fluids, supporting unusual communities of tube worms, scale worms, limpets and other creatures.
