This is a Charlieplexed RGB LED cube, The LEDs are configured using 16 spires of 4 charlieplexed RGB LEDs, the 16 spires have 4 leads, which are also charlieplexed to 16 lead connected to an arduino nano microcontroller.
The amazing thing about this design is that it uses no other electronics than the LEDs and the microcontroller. Typically when controlling this many LEDs you need several ICs, capacitors, and resistors. I built this one using stiff wire instead of a circuit board, and steel wires holding up the spires, so that its free-standing using nothing but wire, solder, and LEDs.
