35 friends & alumni of Duke University visited Blue-Merle Winery July 17 to create the best possible wine from among 10 varietals grown in San Diego, Paso Robles and Guadeloupe Valley. They divided into 3 teams: Italy, France, USA each tasked with creating a blend using varietals originally from their respective region. Team USA (which had no restrictions) won convincingly with a blend of Petit Verdot 56%, Cabernet Franc 25%, Zinfandel 9%, Tempranillo 5%, Petit Sirah 5%. Afterward, we marched up the hill to Merlot Mike's Escondido Sunrise Vineyard for a taste of Merlot. Do you think this is an effective way to decide on wine blends? (It sure was fun.)
