- Invisible Door (for violin and harpsichord, 2015) -
composed by Hyo-shin Na
Hyunjung Choi, violin & Sonia Lee, harpsichord

Ideas and inspiration for Invisible Door (2015) came from the Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin’s Self-portrait with Death Playing the Fiddle. Here, Böcklin (1827-1901) depicts the artist pausing in the act of painting as he hears the strange music coming out of Death’s single-stringed violin and feels the light touch of Death’s skeletal hand on his shoulder. We don’t know exactly what the artist is thinking, but there is a feeling of darkness, apprehension, solitude and the presence of something not seen.

This piece was commissioned by Hyunjung Choi.
