Wondering why you are getting "£" instead of "#" ? The default keyboard layout with the standard Raspberry Pi image is a British layout. This video will describes how you can change it to default to a US layout. WARNING: This assumes you know how to us VI text editor... if not please read below

Overview of tasks done
1.) Open file keyboard file: sudo vi /etc/default/keyboard
2.) change "gb" to "us"
3.) save and exit [esc]:wq


Basic Commands (Don't forget the ":", type them in sequence)
sudo vi /etc/default/keyboard Edit Config File
[esc]:wq[Return] quit vi, saving file
[esc]:q![Return] quit vi without saving
[esc]i to begin typing
