Markus Ekman, CIO of VTT, sees that the need for computing is in a strong growth on all new research project areas. The processes of the new areas like virtualization, augmented reality, bioinformatics or data-analysis are very much dependent on easy availability of computing capacity.
It is highly crucial to continuously screen the diverse markets and identify/find the winning tools and procedures and then make these market winning high-performance computing tools available for the researchers and labs. VTT uses a wide variety of research applications which are linked to HPC.
A CIO, must identify where the world and business is moving, and to try to understand the needs to make it sure that we have the best possible platforms to play the game of today and tomorrow. It is the CIO's task to ensure that the organization has advanced, easy to use, competitive and secure research infrastructure. Obviously, IT Management need also to pay a lot of attention on efficiency and productivity. If usability is not there, that will have direct implications on our customer projects.
HPC Leadership is not about having the biggest computer. Rather, it is about how effectively or smartly you are able use your environment to make scientists, laboratories/ factories, partners more productive and innovative.
