A 2D unit vector is a line segment reduced to a certain length. But unit vectors work in exact same ways in 3D as well. It always helps to keep all unit vectors short.

Reducing your vectors to unit vectors not only helps make calculations easier in some cases but can also visually represent your vector normals as something that looks less abrasive on the eyes when displaying your vector data!
