Mumias is one of the country's sugar belts and home to thousands of sugarcane farmers. Some farmers however have abandoned sugarcane for other crops due to low productivity. Research attributes the low performance on loss of soil fertility, long term monocultural land utilization and use of fertilizers. But some farmers are trying to breath new life into soils in their shambas and reduce what scientists term as the impact of climate change.
