In this interview with the Love and Human Agency project, philosopher Elijah Milgram argues that the project rests on a mistaken premise, because love and caring are not real mental states, capable of explaining human behavior. Rather, they are "bubameises" -- that is, "grandmothers' stories" -- that we tell about ourselves, after the fact, to put our behavior in a flattering light.
