CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Events around the tri-state honor local veterans Monday. Students lined the corridors of JF Burns Elementary in Deerfield Township to show their appreciation for those who have served. They waved American flags and applauded as vets from World War II to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq made their way down the halls, shaking hands with the children. Many stuck around after the parade to talk to classes. The idea behind Veterans Day isn't exclusive to the United States and it wasn't always called Veterans Day. In the 1970s, Veterans Day was temporarily made into a Monday holiday, like Columbus Day, to give government employees a three-day weekend. Many groups didn't like that, so it moved back to November 11th. It was on the 11th the armistice that ended World War I went into effect. The holiday was originally called Armistice Day, but later expanded to honor anyone who has served in the US military. Australia, Britain, Canada and France also honor their service men and women around this time.
