11. Mental and social engagement: We have discussed food and physical activity as the two wholistic pillars for health and longevity. Both these approaches require the framework of hormesis to practice. The third pill to stop ageing (if that is what you are still fixed on) is the mental and social engagement. Keeping your brain and mind active – both when you are on your own and when you are together with others. Healthy social involvement with friends or groups of people really makes you feel good about yourself. Actually, it is also a kind of hormetic challenge, which you must choose for giving pleasure or happiness or sense of fulfilment. Even such activity should be moderate and not obsessive, and it should be variable. Even being alone is not negative and harmful. Loneliness by choice is wonderful. Solitude is great. It is the imposed loneliness – just like imposed stress – which is terrible. Social engagement that makes you feel good about yourself and makes you feel that you are doing something good for everybody is good for health. If it does not put you into some narrow box based on faith, religion, politics and whatever. So, food, physical activity and mental and social engagement will surely hep you maintain health, improve health. But what does it mean to say maintaining health – what is health? That is what needs to be clarified – in the next two minutes.
