Minutes after the quake, I had just witnessed dead and dying people crushed in falling debris where they had stood in the heart of the CBD shopping district. At that point I decided to leave the CBD where I both run a retail shop and a business plus live in a 6th story apartment all within one block as it seemed useless to try to help from what I could see due to the fact I witnessed people who were trying to help be hit and killed themselves with falling debris and glass. There were lots of school kids standing around who had not seen the dead and severely injured as schools had finished early that day. They needed to be told of deaths to immediately explain the seriousness of the situation and cause them urgency to leave as they were just standing there and in great danger. You can see the shock when I tell them of deaths as they raise their hands to their faces. As I continued to walk out, I noticed people walking into the CBD and began to warn of the destruction and possible risk of death, some listened and turned to leave and others didn't. Upon reaching the CTV building I had no idea of the amount of people trapped and perished inside as I continued to film, though I knew there would be some, I had no idea I was filming the last place of life for over 120 people only minutes after the collapse and their deaths. I then walk into Latimer Square where it is obvious how many people had no idea of the severity as they had obviously not yet seen the severely injured or dead and possibly not yet seen the serious destruction, though, they were standing next to the distraught whom had obviously been exposed to the traumatic scenarios that had just unfolded right in front of their unfortunate eyes. It took about an hour for ALL to come to some sort of realization as to the level of destruction and pain as they then began to slowly drift off home only to find that the destruction was not just based in the CBD, but on every street and every corner of the greater Christchurch City as captured by my video in my own journey out of the Central City. Five days on, the level of destruction is yet still unveiling its ugly head as we slowly begin to realize the mammoth ongoing financial and emotional drain that this event has caused our humble little country. Myself, forced to leave all I know behind, my posessions, my friends, my family and most painfully...all my memories :(
