Town Hall Meeting in Cedar Grove - June 19, 2012 (Transcript Below)

Governor Christie: In the last couple weeks, we've seen an ugly type of Democrat start to rear its head again. I think you thought you had slayed this type of Democrat in 2009, that you had taken the wooden stake and put it through this kind of Democrat's heart. But I am here to tell you today that I fear this type of Democrat has returned to the state Legislature. You know what kind of Democrat I'm talking about? Corzine Democrat. Yeah, that's right. The Corzine Democrats are back. Now how do you define what is a Corzine Democrat? Here's what a Corzine Democrat is. A Corzine Democrat is the kind of Democrat who thinks that raising taxes and fees 115 times over the last eight years is fiscally responsible but cutting spending on wasteful programs is cruel. That's a Corzine Democrat. A Corzine Democrat is the kind of Democrat who raised your taxes or fees in the eight years before I became Governor every 25 days. Every 25 days for eight years the Corzine Democrats had their hands in your pocket to take more money from your family to feed their obsession with bigger and bigger government in Trenton.

Yet here we are 12 days away from the session, 2 ½ years into my term—we thought the Corzine Democrats were dead but they're back. They're back. They're back and they're going to tell you now over the next twelve days, and this is the best of it. They're going to tell you we'll put money in the budget for a tax cut and we promise you we'll give it to you in January.

Now you all remember the cartoon character Wimpy, right? He said he would be happy to pay you tomorrow for a hamburger today. That's what the Corzine Democrats want to do. They say trust us. Trust us. We'll give you that tax cut but not now. You have to be good little boys and girls and wait till January. And if we decide you've been good little boys and girls then maybe, maybe we'll give you that tax cut in January. Now you've been waiting for eight years for the property tax relief that Jim McGreevey and Dick Codey and Jon Corzine promised you, waiting for eight years for that. Let me give you a hint: if you all are still waiting by the mailbox, go inside. Get yourself a cup of coffee and relax. It ain't coming. If you think that those same people who for eight years raised your taxes and fees at the state level every 25 days are all of a sudden this January going to have an epiphany, they're going to wake up and go oh my goodness. We've been taxing the people of New Jersey too much. It's time to cut their taxes, and we promised them back in July we'd do it in January, so let's get to it, then you haven't been watching the same movie I've been watching.
