Thomas Bak of Front-safe discusses using the IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager platform as a scalable solution that reduces enterprise complexity for companies of any size.
Front-safe started out in 2006 with a vision of bringing the enterprise, Tivoli Storage Manager platform, into a new market, a market of smaller and medium-sized companies. And so we had the challenge that we needed to take out the enterprise complexity on the client side to make the end customers that were smaller customers actually being able to manage that themselves or manage it through their preferred IT partners and we did this by building a TSM portal.
The portal includes everything needed for bringing TSM to market as a cloud solution, including daily easy-to-understand reporting, billing -- basically everything needed for those partners to actually be delivering the solution. The portal also enables them to go in their own name and brand, so it's OEM-brandable.
Having removed the complexity of TSM has resulted in Front-safe being able to actually deliver TSM through a network of partners that has no TSM skills at all. This could be partners doing Microsoft solutions, never had hands on with TSM. The learning curve is very fast. In a small two-hour workshop, they'll be able to install their first customer and run their customer base.
TSM holds many capabilities that are perfect for delivering a cloud service. One is Incremental Forever technology that result in as little as much data being transferred as possible. The other one is compression. Before, we sent data from the customer side to the data center. Data is compressed, and again, resulting in fewer data being sent over the Internet.
When you want to do a cloud backup solution, you need some software that transfers as little data as possible, and with the TSM incremental-forever technology, you're really sure that you don't send more data than needed when you do the daily backups.
Using TSM as our backup engine actually allow us to scale our solution all the way down to one main company with only a laptop or maybe one server or small customers with one to ten servers, and all the way up to our biggest customers who are customers with more than 200 servers and more than 100 terabytes of data. You won't find many backup engines that could actually be a platform supporting that kind of scalability.
