Whooping cough is thought to be a historical entity and several clinicians do not consider its possibility in a given case of prolonged cough. However, it does exist in India, not only in children but also in adults. Typically, the bouts of cough last several minutes, recur more than 30-40 times and sometimes more frequent at night. During bouts, tearing from eyes, flushing of face and vomiting can occur. In adult women it is often associated with urinary incontinence. several cases have been treated with therapeutic application of vaccine. In such cases, 3 doses of DPT vaccine can be given at weekly interval.
