Vietnam War Heroes. Australia In The Vietnam War

From 1962 approximately 50,000 Australians, including ground troops, air force and navy personnel served in Vietnam. 520 died and close to 2,400 were wounded.

The Vietnam War caused great social and political dissent. Conscripts were sent to Vietnam. Many draft resisters, conscientious objectors, and protesters were fined or gaoled, while soldiers met a hostile reception on their return home.

The Battle of Long Tan is arguably the most famous battle fought by the Australian Army during the Vietnam War. It was fought in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan, about 4 km north-east of Vung Tau, South Vietnam on August 18-19, 1966. Why was Australia involved in the Vietnam War?

Up until the Vietnam War, this was the longest war Australia had been involved in. It was also know as the media war with television bringing the war into the homes of Australians frequently.

Australia's supported the United States in Vietnam War. 'All the way with LBJ',(President of the USA) was a slogan of the 60s to ramp up support for the war. Containing communism was largely the allied countries reason for entering Vietnam militarily.

The 1968 Tet Offensive, where the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army (NVA) showed they were not a beaten force, going into into Cambodia and the unpopularity of conscription and a never ending casualty rate, lead the public to grow wary of the war. Also the use of chemicals like Agent Orange, created a public backlash and forced the countries involved in the war to gradually withdraw their troops from 1971. Australia officially ended it's active military participation in the war in 1973. America finally withdrew in 1975.
