As you head off to the beach this summer with your family and friends, biotechnology is probably the last thing on your mind. What you might not realize is the vast amount of potential that the world's oceans hold for curing disease. Biotechnology researchers are currently exploring the secrets of marine life in hopes of learning more about the genetics of viruses, how to utilize chemicals unique to marine species to help fight cancer, and even replicate the bacteria found naturally in marine environments to help break down metal pollutants. Stay tuned as Dr. Targan takes us on a tour of marine biotechnology - and its great promise for new therapies and environmental protection.
